Description

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) has been a known herb in Hungary for 2000 years, introduced by Roman soldiers from the Mediterranean. Anise seeds are obtained by harvesting the seeds, it is worth saving them and using them to flavour dishes. In addition to its spice and medicinal properties, it is an important food plant for the caterpillar of the swallowtail butterfly, which is a favourite munching food of the celery family (Apiaceae).

Sow the seeds in spring in prepared soil or pots. Plant the seeds in their permanent location, they will not survive transplanting. Cover the seeds with soil. Water them. Keep the soil moist for the first few weeks. Annual flower by 8-10 weeks after sowing. For long flowering, sow 1-1 batch every 3-4 weeks. Delight in the spectacle!

TIP: sown before/when the spring bulbs flower, the annuals will flower just as the spring bulbs are disappearing and will cover the drying foliage of the bulbs.
