The Spanish ladybird(Nigella hispanica) is a wild flower native to Spain, closely related to the common garden ladybird (Nigella damascena), the field ladybird (Nigella arvensis), also native to Hungary, and the garden ladybird (Nigella sativa), also used as a herb and medicinal plant. Like the other Nigellas, it is a super annual plant that is very easy to grow and sows itself year after year in our gardens. Its seed pods are also very ornamental, both when in flower, and the seed pod can make a lovely ornament to cut flower bouquets.

Sow the seeds in spring in prepared soil or pots. Sow the seeds in their permanent location, they do not take well to transplanting. Cover the seeds with soil, pressing the soil down a little. Water them. Keep the soil moist for the first 1-2 weeks. Annual flower by 8-10 weeks after sowing. It's worth sowing a batch every two to three weeks for continuous summer flowering. It is an easy flower to grow and its small size makes it a good addition to a balcony or window box. Enjoy the view!

TIP: sown before/when the spring bulbs flower, the annuals will flower just as the spring bulbs are disappearing and will cover the drying foliage of the bulbs.
