Wild carrot (Daucus carota) 1g, ~1450 seeds
875 Ft
Our well-known wild flower, the wild cousin of our favourite carrot, is the wild carrot(Daucus carota). Not only pollinators, but other insects are also very fond of it, and you can often see boda boda and other small insects basking on its top. It is the food plant of one of our beautiful butterfly species, the caterpillar of the swallowtail butterfly. Queen Ann's lace is one of the names given to it for its lace-like flowers. Interestingly, the young, post-flowering flowers have a single reddish-reddish flower in the centre, which, according to the legend of Queen Anne, is a drop of Queen Anne's blood spurred by a lace-making competition she held when she pricked her finger. Since then, legend has it that this single purple flower in the centre of the wildflower symbolises Queen Anne's blood.

Sow the seeds in spring, winter or autumn in prepared soil. Sow the seeds in their permanent location, they will not bear transplanting. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Sprinkle them with water. Keep the soil moist for the first 1-2 weeks. Flower as an annual by 8-10 weeks after sowing. Delight in the spectacle!
TIP: sown before/when the spring bulbs flower, the annuals will flower just as the spring bulbs are disappearing and will cover the drying foliage of the bulbs.
