Lily of the valley (Cerinthe major "Purpurascens) 1g, ~20 seeds
875 Ft
Cerinthe major is a native European flower, the cultivated form of which is this purple, "Purpurascens" colour variation. We also have the wild freckle-leaved Cerinthe minor, which has very interestingly mottled leaves, so you can recognise it from a distance. A close relative of this native freckle-leaved species is this European annual, but whereas the Hungarian freckle-leaved has yellow flowers, this 'Purpurascens' has purple flowers, similar to black needle-leaved. It is very easy to grow and blooms all summer long, it is even less common in this country, although it is a fantastic flower. It also belongs to the borage family, which are the best bumblebee-attracting flowers. In Hungary, the borage species that are native to the country include medical atracaela, the bluebell snake-grass, the black needle-grass, the common tadpole-grass and the medical lungwort.

Sow the seeds in spring in prepared soil or pots. Cover the seeds with about half an inch of soil. Water them. Keep the soil moist for the first few weeks. Annual flower by spring sowing 8-10 weeks after sowing and will continue to flower throughout the summer. It often sheds its seeds, from which the sprouted seedlings overwinter. Enjoy the spectacle!
Sown before/when the spring bulbs flower, the annuals will have flowered by the time the spring bulbs are gone and will also cover the drying foliage of the bulbs.
